Second to our obvious goldfish species, golden orfe prove to be a very popular fish. These fast growing, very active, and attractive pond species are a lovely addition to many ponds. Although these species are suitable for ponds, they do have slightly different requirements to goldfish species. Orfe are a lot more comfortable in faster moving water that is highly oxygenated. Due to them being a surface dwelling fish, and very oxygen dependant, suitable ponds for orfe, should be well filtered, and oxygenated. Although this species can survive in still water, they are much happier in moving water. Orfe can grow to lengths in excess of 24”(60cm), therefore they do require more space that goldfish.
Orfe need to be kept in small shoals. Small groups, in low or high numbers, will benefit these fish greatly. They will feel much more secure, and the general vitality of the fish will be greatly improved.
Orfe will feed happily on a varied diet, consisting of pellets, stick, and flaked dried preparations. This fish will also be more than happy grazing on small larvae in the pond.
*Orfe are particularly sensitive to certain parasite treatments, so be sure to read the bottle of any treatment carefully before treating a pond, which orfe populate.
